About the Project

An online learning platform specializing in surgical training and education, particularly in the field of spine surgery. The platform offers high-quality educational content through videos, live diagrams, and animations. The goal is to improve understanding of spine surgery techniques, principles, and procedures for medical students, residents, and fellows studying spine surgery.

Design Goals

In the US, there are only about 5,000 active spine surgeons — a narrow professional audience with high quality standards. Our goal was to create a platform that combines three products in one: a learning system with courses and tests, a surgical reference with 3D visualization, and a professional community — all working seamlessly on both web and mobile.

Research & Interviews

We conducted 10 in-depth interviews with practicing surgeons and students. Key pain points: finding the right technique takes hours, materials are scattered across platforms, content is outdated or overloaded with theory, and there’s a lack of peer feedback. They value concise content, 3D visualizations, and mobile accessibility the most.

Archetype & Metaphor

The brand is built on the Sage archetype: authoritative yet supportive tone. The key metaphor is the ‘University of Surgical Knowledge’: each section is a separate building, video covers feature schematic university buildings, and the profile serves as a student ID.

Concept

The main visual device is a unique color theme for each of the four main sections: the user always feels which ‘university building’ they are in. Serif Gambarino in headings sets the academic character, while sharp card corners reflect the precision of medicine.

Onboarding & Personalization

Registration builds a clinical profile — specialty, experience, and interests — to personalize content from day one.

Home & Search

The home screen works as a personal learning hub: current courses with progress, curated content collections, and recommendations. Search spans the entire library — guides, 3D models, and videos — with filters by content type.

Content that Works Like a Reference

Each procedure is a structured unit of knowledge: a video lecture, indications, history, ‘pearls and pitfalls,’ and key takeaways — all on a single page. Step-by-step guides serve as a pre-operative checklist, while comments turn each procedure into a space for professional discussion.

Step-by-Step Guide

Each procedure includes a skin-to-skin guide — the full sequence of surgical steps with visualizations and key moments. Quick to review before surgery, detailed enough for in-depth study.

Courses & Knowledge Checks

Courses combine lectures into a guided learning path with progress tracking. Each module ends with a quiz: instant feedback, detailed error analysis, and a clear result. Learning becomes measurable — for both the user and the academy.

Interactive 3D Anatomy

Text and video aren’t always enough to understand spatial anatomy. Interactive 3D models allow rotating, zooming, and exploring anatomy from any angle — on desktop and mobile.

Professional Community

The community space includes group chats, topic-based groups, and posts — with an anonymous mode for sensitive clinical questions. Surgeons can consult with colleagues from around the world without leaving the platform.

Personal Knowledge Base

Notes can be attached to any content — even to timestamps in videos — and edited at any time; bookmarks live in their own folders. Over time, each surgeon builds their personal library within the academy.
